Descrição

In a world of constant light and constant noise, the nervous system rarely gets to rest. Dark retreat, an ancient practice preserved in Buddhist and shamanic lineages, offers a counterintuitive remedy: stepping into total darkness to restore balance, clarity and a deeper kind of seeing. This spiritual workshop at Esalen Institute in Big Sur, CA, brings that practice into the present day with Andrew Holecek and cognitive scientist Mark Miller.

Traditionally, dark retreat means spending time, from hours to weeks, in a completely dark cabin or cave. It has been practiced for healing, insight, creativity and preparation for the end of life. Essentially a concentrated form of meditation, it is a way of exploring the depths of the unconscious mind. Here it is offered as an accessible introduction, grounded in neuroscience, psychological modeling and philosophical frameworks rather than presented as an exotic technique.

For the seeker who feels overstimulated, distracted or out of touch with themselves, this weekend in Big Sur offers a way to slow down and come back into contact with body, mind and world.

What to Expect

The workshop is experiential, and it moves between direct practice and exploration of the ideas behind it.

- Morning sessions: Using an eye mask, you will discover how darkness can restore your nervous system and bring your body and mind into equilibrium.
- Afternoon sessions: Simple visual exercises curtail sensory overload and help realign your sense faculties.
- Throughout: The teachers investigate how dark retreat works with the unconscious mind and what actually takes place at the neurological level.

The teaching also speaks to what the organizers call the meta-crisis, a crisis of touch. Blinded by the light of distraction and immersed in the dangers of AI, we have lost touch with ourselves, with one another and with the planet. Going into the dark is offered as a way to return to that contact and reclaim our humanity.
