Matrix Reimprinting

A meridian tapping technique developed in 2008 by Karl Dawson that extends EFT to transform traumatic memories by working with dissociated parts of consciousness.

What is Matrix Reimprinting?

Matrix Reimprinting is a therapeutic technique that combines meridian tapping with memory reconsolidation and parts work to resolve emotional and physical issues rooted in past trauma. Developed from Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT), Matrix Reimprinting introduces the concept of working directly with “ECHOs” (Energetic Consciousness Holograms)—dissociated aspects of consciousness that split off during stressful or traumatic events. Practitioners enter their own memories as active participants, applying acupressure tapping to these younger selves and transforming the emotional charge and beliefs formed during traumatic incidents. Unlike traditional EFT, which neutralizes the emotional intensity of memories, Matrix Reimprinting claims to rewrite the memory itself, creating new neural pathways and changing one’s relationship to the past.

The technique draws on concepts from quantum field theory, epigenetics, and parts theory (similar to Internal Family Systems), proposing that traumatic experiences are held in an energetic “matrix” or field that influences present-day thoughts, behaviors, and health. By resolving these stored traumas and reimprinting positive outcomes into memory, practitioners report relief from conditions ranging from PTSD and phobias to chronic pain and relationship difficulties.

Origins & Lineage

Matrix Reimprinting was created in 2008 by Karl Dawson, one of only 28 EFT Founding Masters Worldwide. Dawson, an EFT Master trainer, completed his own training with the founder of EFT, Gary Craig. The technique emerged spontaneously during a live demonstration: whilst running an EFT training course in Australia, Karl asked the student who was taking part in a demonstration if she could see her younger self in a particular memory. The student responded “I can see her so clearly I could tap on her,” and so the initial idea of Matrix Reimprinting was born.

Dawson systematized this discovery over the following years, publishing his foundational text Matrix Reimprinting using EFT: Rewrite Your Past, Transform Your Future with co-author Sasha Allenby in 2010 through Hay House. He subsequently released Transform Your Beliefs, Transform Your Life: EFT Tapping Using Matrix Reimprinting (2018), which focused specifically on working with core beliefs. The technique has since been taught internationally through the EFT & Matrix Reimprinting Academy, which certifies practitioners in both EFT and Matrix Reimprinting protocols.

How It’s Practiced

A Matrix Reimprinting session typically begins with identifying a presenting issue—anxiety, chronic pain, a relationship pattern, or a specific phobia. The practitioner guides the client to recall a memory connected to this issue, often using the EFT Movie Technique as a starting point. Instead of simply tapping on the emotional intensity while observing the memory from a distance (as in traditional EFT), the client is invited to step into the scene and locate their younger self—the ECHO.

The practitioner then facilitates tapping on the ECHO (either by tapping on the client’s own body while the client visualizes tapping on the ECHO, or through the client’s imagination). The ECHO is asked what it needs, what it wants to say or do, and what resources might help. The client may bring in supportive figures, express previously unspoken truths, or physically remove themselves from dangerous situations within the memory. Once the ECHO feels safe and the emotional charge has resolved, the client “reimprints” the new memory—sending a new image into the matrix/field to replace the old traumatic imprint.

Sessions may address specific incidents (birth trauma, childhood abuse, accidents) or broader themes (worthlessness, abandonment, rejection). Advanced practitioners work with pre-verbal memories, past lives, and future selves, though the core protocol remains focused on identifiable traumatic events.

Matrix Reimprinting Today

Matrix Reimprinting is primarily encountered through trained practitioners certified by the EFT & Matrix Reimprinting Academy or similar organizations. Karl Dawson continues to teach multi-day certification trainings internationally, combining EFT Level 1 and Level 2 courses with two-day Matrix Reimprinting Practitioner programs. The technique is often practiced alongside other somatic and energy psychology modalities, particularly among practitioners who integrate trauma-informed bodywork, parts work, or holistic healing approaches.

Many seekers discover Matrix Reimprinting through the broader EFT community or through practitioners advertising meridian tapping therapies. Sessions are offered both in-person and via video conference. The technique has gained a following among those seeking alternatives to conventional talk therapy, particularly individuals dealing with complex trauma, chronic illness, or persistent emotional blocks that have not resolved through other methods.

The approach is taught and practiced primarily in the UK, Europe, Australia, and North America, with a growing presence in the conscious/spiritual wellness community. Practitioners often work privately rather than in clinical settings, though some integrate Matrix Reimprinting into counseling, coaching, or complementary health practices.

Common Misconceptions

Matrix Reimprinting is not the same as EFT—it is an extension that requires understanding of the foundational EFT protocol. While EFT can be practiced as a simple self-help technique, Matrix Reimprinting typically requires facilitation by a trained practitioner, especially when working with severe trauma.

The technique does not claim to change objective historical events. The “reimprinting” refers to transforming the emotional charge, beliefs, and somatic imprints associated with memories—not altering what actually occurred. Critics argue that the quantum physics framework invoked by the technique conflates metaphor with mechanism, and that memory transformation may occur through established psychological processes (memory reconsolidation, imaginal exposure, parts work) rather than through a literal energetic field.

Matrix Reimprinting should not be considered a replacement for medical or psychiatric treatment, particularly for serious mental health conditions. While practitioners report positive outcomes, the technique lacks the extensive clinical research base of established trauma therapies such as EMDR or Prolonged Exposure. The emphasis on “rewriting the past” can mislead newcomers into thinking memories are being erased or that past events can be undone, rather than understanding that the work addresses present-day emotional responses to those events.

How to Begin

The most direct entry point to understanding Matrix Reimprinting is Karl Dawson and Sasha Allenby’s Matrix Reimprinting using EFT: Rewrite Your Past, Transform Your Future (Hay House, 2010), which provides theoretical foundation, step-by-step protocols, and case transcripts. The book assumes some familiarity with EFT, so complete beginners may benefit from first learning basic EFT tapping through Gary Craig’s original materials or Nick Ortner’s The Tapping Solution.

For those seeking to experience the technique firsthand, locating a certified Matrix Reimprinting practitioner through the EFT & Matrix Reimprinting Academy directory is recommended. Initial sessions typically run 60-90 minutes and can be conducted online. Those interested in professional training should first complete EFT Level 1 and Level 2 certification before pursuing the two-day Matrix Reimprinting Practitioner course.

Self-practice is possible for those with established EFT skills and personal therapy experience, though working with a skilled practitioner is advisable when addressing significant trauma, as the process can surface intense emotions and requires careful navigation of dissociated states.
