Organic House

A subgenre of house music blending electronic beats with acoustic instruments, field recordings, and world music influences to create meditative, spiritually-infused dance music.

What is Organic House?

Organic house is a subgenre of house music that emphasizes acoustic instruments and natural sounds. The genre was made as a way to express a “deeper, more meditative, and occasionally slower shades of house music,” often combining elements of Deep House, Melodic House, Electronica, and Afro House. Unlike conventional electronic dance music that relies heavily on synthesized sounds, organic house integrates field recordings, live percussion, and traditional instruments from diverse cultural traditions—creating what practitioners describe as a warmer, more human sonic texture.

The genre is characterized by a deeper mellow sound that is a combination of a multi-layered percussion line based largely on the sound of African drums such as bongos and congas, and atmospheric melodies created using both synthesizers and traditional instruments - violin, vibraphone, or kalimba. The tempo typically ranges from 100 to 125 BPM, slower than most house subgenres, encouraging contemplative movement rather than high-energy dancing.

Origins & Lineage

Organic house gradually arose from the 2010s deep house and Tech House/Minimal Techno scenes, with DJs like Sébastien Léger, Lee Burridge, and Oliver Koletzki developing the sound. The term was first officially introduced by electronic music specialist Beatport in June 2020, although music possessing organic house characteristics had already been present since around 2017, including at well-known festivals such as Burning Man, Lightning in a Bottle, and Desert Hearts.

Before receiving formal genre classification, this sound was known by various names including “spiritual house,” “desert house,” and “Playa Tech”—references to its prominence at transformational desert festivals. That being said, many of the pioneers would be rather new artists such as Elfenberg, Volen Sentir and Roy Rosenfeld. Labels like All Day I Dream, Melody of the Soul, Sol Selectas, TRYBESof and Anjunadeep became the main hubs of the genre. Beatport’s 2020 categorization formalized what had been an organic (in both senses) evolution within the broader house music ecosystem.

How It’s Practiced

Organic house production prioritizes texture and dynamic range over the aggressive kick drums typical of mainstream house. The kicks tend to be softer in nature, and mixed more quietly. This gives the rest of the instruments in the track more space to breathe. Whilst the kick is important in Organic House, it’s not THE most important thing.

These atmospheric elements often include sounds of flowing water, birdsong, and wind, creating a sense of immersion. Nonetheless, organic house’s instrumentation and samples are typically borrowed from West Asian Music and South Asian Music, instead of Southern African Music. Live musicians often record parts specifically for tracks, and producers incorporate instruments such as flutes, acoustic guitars, hand percussion, marimbas, and traditional vocals from cultures worldwide.

Progressive House was influential as well, as can be heard in organic house’s delicate production and long, gradual song structures, sometimes sharing traits with Melodic House. Tracks frequently exceed six or seven minutes, allowing space for sonic narratives to unfold gradually.

Organic House Today

Organic house has become the signature sound of transformational and conscious festivals, particularly in desert and coastal settings. Organic house has found particular popularity in desert-located festivals like Burning Man, as well as club scenes of Mediterranean resort spots. Venues in Tulum, Ibiza, and Bali have become centers for the genre, with extended sunset and sunrise sets creating immersive listening environments.

The genre thrives on streaming platforms through carefully curated playlists that emphasize journey over individual tracks. Record labels like All Day I Dream host intimate gatherings that blur the line between concert, meditation, and communal ritual. DJs in this genre often perform extended 4-6 hour sets, prioritizing gradual emotional arcs over peak-and-release energy cycles.

Producers and listeners access the genre through specialized labels, festival recordings, and YouTube channels dedicated to “spiritual house” or “conscious electronic music.” The scene maintains a more intimate scale than mainstream EDM, with practitioners valuing musical sophistication and intentional listening over commercial scale.

Common Misconceptions

Organic house is not simply deep house with nature sounds added. The integration of acoustic elements requires fundamental shifts in arrangement, mixing philosophy, and rhythmic approach. This further draws similarities to Tropical House, but the genre aims for a much more spiritual, mature atmosphere compared to the joyful sound of tropical house.

The term “organic” does not mean acoustic-only or anti-electronic. Synthesizers remain essential to the sound, providing ambient textures and bass foundations. The designation refers instead to the approach—emphasizing human touch, cultural authenticity, and natural sonic textures within an electronic framework.

While the genre has spiritual associations, it is not devotional music in any traditional sense. Practitioners value contemplative qualities and intentional listening, but organic house remains fundamentally dance music designed for movement and collective experience.

How to Begin

For listeners new to organic house, begin with labels rather than individual artists. Explore catalogs from All Day I Dream, Sol Selectas, and Anjunadeep, where A&R teams curate cohesive sonic visions. Playlists tagged “organic house,” “spiritual house,” or “desert house” on Spotify and Apple Music provide accessible entry points.

Attend a transformational festival with organic house programming—experiencing the music in its intended context of outdoor gatherings, extended sets, and communal ritual clarifies what recorded tracks alone cannot. Lightning in a Bottle, Envision Festival, and regional Burning Man events regularly feature organic house stages.

For aspiring producers, study how tracks balance electronic and acoustic elements. Invest in high-quality field recording equipment and acoustic sample libraries featuring non-Western instruments. Focus on developing restraint—organic house rewards subtlety, space, and patient arrangement over maximalist production techniques common in other electronic genres.
