Human Design

A personality-typing system synthesizing astrology, the I Ching, Kabbalah, and the chakra system, based on birth data to generate an individualized 'BodyGraph' chart.

What is Human Design?

Human Design is a self-knowledge system that generates a personalized chart—called a BodyGraph—using precise birth data (date, time, and location). The system synthesizes elements from the I Ching, astrology, Kabbalah, genetics, quantum physics, and the Hindu-Brahman chakra system, producing a graphic diagram of nine energy centers, 64 gates, and 36 channels intended to map an individual’s energetic structure, decision-making strategy, and life purpose. Practitioners describe it as a mechanical, non-belief-based framework for understanding personality, health, relationships, and vocation. Unlike psychological typologies, Human Design claims to reveal a biochemical imprint shaped by planetary positions at two specific moments: approximately 88 days before birth and at the moment of birth itself.

Origins & Lineage

Human Design was created by a man known as Ra Uru Hu (born Robert Alan Krakower), born April 9, 1948, in Montréal, Canada. Krakower completed a Bachelor of Arts degree and worked as an advertising executive, magazine publisher, and media producer before leaving his career and family in 1983. He walked away from his life as an entrepreneur and several months later found himself on the island of Ibiza in the Mediterranean Sea off the eastern coast of Spain.

On the evening of January 3, 1987, he encountered what he called “The Voice”. Over eight days and nights, he received what he called “The Voice,” a transmission of knowledge that revealed the mechanics of life itself. Krakower described this as an external intelligence dictating a complete cosmological and typological system in remarkable detail. The transmission occurred shortly after Supernova 1987A, the closest observed supernova in over 400 years. After the experience, he adopted the name Ra Uru Hu and spent the following 25 years developing, teaching, and refining the system. Ra passed away in his home on March 12, 2011. Krakower published a book called The Human Design System under the pseudonym Ra Uru Hu in 1992.

The system itself is not drawn from a single lineage but rather synthesizes four older knowledge streams: the 64 hexagrams of the Chinese I Ching (Book of Changes), the Kabbalistic Tree of Life with its ten Sephiroth and 22 pathways, the Hindu-Brahmin chakra system (adapted from seven to nine centers), and Western astrology’s planetary transits. In Human Design, the 64 gates correspond to the 64 hexagrams of the I Ching; this number also aligns with the 64 codons in human DNA responsible for encoding amino acids—a symbolic correlation central to the system’s claim of mapping genetic structure.

How It’s Practiced

Human Design practice begins with the generation of a BodyGraph, a visual chart resembling a stylized human torso with nine geometric shapes (centers) connected by lines (channels). This chart is calculated using birth data and shows which centers are “defined” (colored) or “undefined” (white), which of the 64 gates are activated, and which channels form connections. Practitioners then interpret this map according to five energetic Types—Manifestor, Generator, Manifesting Generator, Projector, and Reflector—each with its own decision-making “Authority” (e.g., Sacral, Emotional, Splenic) and behavioral “Strategy.”

A Human Design reading typically involves a trained analyst walking a client through their chart, explaining their Type, Authority, Profile (a two-number archetype such as 3/5 or 6/2), and the specific gates and channels that shape their energy flow. Emphasis is placed on deconditioning from societal expectations and aligning with one’s inherent design. Practitioners often encourage a multi-year experiment of living according to one’s Strategy and Authority before deeper layers—such as the Incarnation Cross (life purpose) or Variable (cognitive architecture)—are explored.

Readings may occur one-on-one in person or online, in group workshops, or through pre-recorded chart reports. Some practitioners integrate Human Design with coaching, therapy, or business consulting. The system uses specific jargon: “not-self,” “open centers,” “split definition,” “Penta” (group mechanics), and “the Mandala” (the 360-degree wheel mapping gates to astrological degrees).

Human Design Today

Human Design has grown from a niche European community in the 1990s to a global phenomenon, particularly popular in wellness, coaching, and spiritual entrepreneurship circles. Seekers typically encounter it through social media (Instagram infographics explaining Types and Authorities are widespread), podcasts, YouTube channels, and free online chart generators. Commercial platforms offer automated reports, certification trainings, and membership libraries of recorded lectures.

Ra Uru Hu established the International Human Design School, and Jovian Archive, founded by Ra, remains the primary repository of his original teachings. Numerous independent schools and teachers now offer training programs ranging from foundational courses to advanced analyst certifications. Retreats, workshops, and group experiments (living one’s design in community) are common formats. The Gene Keys, a derivative system created by Richard Rudd (a former student of Ra), has become a parallel movement with its own following.

Criticism of Human Design centers on its origin story, lack of empirical validation, and classification as pseudoscience. Human Design is described as a pseudoscientific theory and practice. Skeptics note the system’s reliance on a mystical revelation, its eclectic synthesis of unrelated traditions, and the absence of peer-reviewed research supporting its claims about DNA, neutrinos, or personality.

Common Misconceptions

Human Design is often mistaken for astrology, but while it uses planetary positions, it does not interpret transits or progressions in the traditional astrological sense. It is also not a religion or belief system—Ra often said, “Human Design is not universal knowledge, it’s personal knowledge”—and practitioners emphasize empirical self-testing over faith.

Many assume it is a quick personality quiz; in reality, it requires sustained experimentation over months or years to observe whether living according to one’s Type and Authority produces the claimed benefits. It is not a divination tool like Tarot or the I Ching; charts are static, calculated once, and meant to describe a fixed energetic blueprint rather than provide guidance on specific decisions.

Finally, Human Design is not universally accepted within spiritual or scientific communities. Its synthesis of ancient systems is not endorsed by traditional practitioners of those systems, and its scientific claims—particularly regarding neutrinos and genetics—are not supported by mainstream physics or biology.

How to Begin

The most accessible entry point is generating a free BodyGraph chart using one of many online calculators (accurate birth time is essential). From there, beginners are encouraged to learn their Type and Authority and begin experimenting with their Strategy in daily life. Reading an introductory text such as Understanding Human Design by Karen Curry or The Definitive Book of Human Design by Lynda Bunnell and Ra Uru Hu provides foundational context.

For those seeking guided instruction, the Jovian Archive offers beginner courses based on Ra Uru Hu’s original lectures, including the “Beginner 1” series. Independent teachers such as Jenna Zoe, Erin Claire Jones, and others offer modern, accessible introductions via courses, apps, and social media. A professional Human Design reading with a certified analyst can provide personalized insight and clarify the chart’s more complex elements.

Practitioners consistently advise patience: Human Design is presented not as a quick fix but as a long-term experiment in self-observation and embodiment. The system’s language and cosmology can feel overwhelming at first; beginners are often told to focus solely on Type, Strategy, and Authority for at least a year before exploring advanced layers.
